چکیده

When the same people interact frequently, they come to think alike, a phenomenon we call “collective cognitive convergence” (C). We discuss instances and practical consequences of this phenomenon; review previous work in sociology, computational social science, and evolutionary biology that sheds light on C; define a computational model and metrics for the convergence process; report on experiments with this model and metrics; and suggest how insights from the model can help manage C.

Understanding Collective Cognitive Convergence

When a set of people interact frequently with one another, they often grow to think more and more along the same lines, a phenomenon we call “collective cognitive convergence” (C). We discuss instances of C and why it is advantageous or disadvantageous; review previous work in sociology, computational social science, and evolutionary biology that sheds light on C; define a computational model f...

Cognitive Modeling of Behavioral Experiments in Network Science Using ACT-R Architecture

The Network Science has dedicated a considerable amount of effort to the study of many distributed collective decision-making processes which must balance diverse individual preferences with an expectation for collective unity. Several works have reported their results about behavioral experiments on biased voting in networks individuals, however we will focus on the results reported on [1] on ...

Cognitive Collapse: Recognizing and Addressing the Hidden Threat in Collaborative Technologies

The growing application of collaborative technologies to C4ISR greatly increases communication and coordination, but poses a hidden threat. When the same set of people interact frequently with one another, they grow to think more and more along the same lines, a phenomenon we call “collective cognitive convergence” (C). The higher the collaborative bandwidth, the faster this convergence, and th...

An Emergentist Account of Collective Cognition in Collaborative Problem Solving

As a first step toward an emergentist theory of collective cognition in collaborative problem solving, we present a proto-theoretical account of how one might conceive and model the intersubjective processes that organize collective cognition into one or another—convergent, divergent, or tensive—cognitive regime. To explore the sufficiency of our emergentist proposal we instantiate a minimalist...

A mathematical analysis of collective cognitive convergence

Multi-agent systems are an attractive approach to modeling systems of interacting entities, but in some cases mathematical models of these systems can offer complementary benefits. We report a case study of how the two modeling methods can profitably engage one another. The system we study [12] is an agent-based simulation of how groups of interacting entities can come to think alike. Though fo...
